As a jumping rider Johan Heins was one of the greatest ever. In 1976 he was participant at the Olympic Games in Montreal. Still at this moment Johan is the only Dutch jumping rider ever to win te individual Gold Medal at the European Championships. At this EC in 1977 Johan also won Gold with the Dutch team. Also he is the only Dutch rider ever to participate in the final Four of the World Championships (1978). During his career Johan won almost 30 Grand Prix as Zuidlaren, Geesteren, Nice, London, Dublin, Leeuwarden, etc.

During his childhood Johan was always surounded by horses. After working at the riding clubs in Meppel and Zuidwolde, he started to work at the famous stable of Alwin Schockemöhle. There the young ambitious guy started to learn the recognition of a jumping horse, education and how to be succesfull at the highest level. During the period 1977-1980 Johan worked at Zangersheide Stud of Leon Melchior and was responsible for selection the jumpers. This period was the most succesfull in his life, Johan won several Grand Prix, became European Champion, twice champion of the Benelux and 4 th at the World Championships.

After his active career Johan nowadays uses his expertise to train horses and riders on an international level. During the Olympic Games in Sidney (2000), Johan Heins was the responsible teamcoach of the Dutch jumping riders of which Jeroen Dubbeldam won gold and Albert Voorn individueel silver!!
